Great question.

I don’t know the answer. Do you?

I’m not sure anyone knows, at least with any degree of certainty. You can ask an ant if ants go to heaven when they die but I’m pretty sure it will just sort of stare at you and wiggle its antennae like you just asked the stupidest question ever.

So in lieu of ants themselves telling us about their eternal destiny, let’s take a leap here and assume ants do not go to heaven when they die. Let’s assume ants just die when they die.

Gone. Kaput. Dead as a doornail.

Then comes the million dollar question.

“If ants don’t go to heaven when they die do their lives have any ultimate meaning?”

I ask that question because I’ve heard people say, “If there’s no heaven to go to when you die, life has no purpose.” And so getting to heaven when they die becomes the primary purpose of their existence on earth.

But what if there is no heaven? What if – like ants – there is no heaven for people to go to when they die? What if we – like them – just die when we die?

Gone. Kaput. Dead as a doornail.

Without heaven do our lives have any real purpose or meaning?

I’m not advocating a theology of “yes” heaven or “no” heaven here.

I’m just asking a question:

Apart from any eternal destiny, does your life have a purpose?

And if so, what is it?

Just something to think about. Your comments are welcome.
