At dusk the dark purple outline of Lempster Mountain rises above the tree line along the western shore of Highland Lake.
Lempster Mountain.
An odd, mysterious place.
Not long after taking possession of Camp Singley back in 1977 we started hearing stories about strange goings on at night up on Lempster Mountain. The stories back then were eerily similar and not at all unlike the stories you hear today – like this one from July 27th, 2014:
We were in Washington, NH approximately 10 miles up Lempster Mountain. We were sitting out on the deck sometime after 9 pm. There were no outside lights on (only the inside kitchen light and 2 tea lights on our tables). We were talking about how clear and quiet it is up there (not from NH), no street lights, no traffic, no neighbors close by (city vs country) and how great the stars looked. So we were talking and watching the sky to see if one of us (4 of us at this time) could see a shooting star. One of us noticed an orange/red orb in the southeast sky. We all watched, thinking it might be a meteor. But it didn’t seem to be moving. Then after several seconds we realized it was moving. It was heading north and as it came within a more easterly view we could see that there were 2 orange/red lights. The front light was bigger and seemed more luminous than the smaller light in the back (both were very bright). The lights were connected by a dull dark shape (unknown) in the middle. We called 3 other people out of the house to see this. Now there are 7 of us watching these lights flying slowly and silently across the sky (high up and never changed altitude). Before the lights were out of our view (behind the tree line) I took 1 picture (sending this picture) on my cell phone (not a smartphone). The whole viewing probably lasted about 3-5 minutes.
That’s just one of numerous published reports about UFO’s on or near Lempster Mountain. Not being one to just accept a stranger’s word for it, I long ago started asking acquaintances around the lake if they had heard similar stories. Not only had some of those friends heard stories…but several had SEEN THINGS THEMSELVES!
Like Ada who lived just down the lake from Camp Singley.
Ada was awakened one night by her dog’s barking. Ada’s first thought was that the pup just needed to go out and do it’s business although she later realized the dog almost never needed to go out in the middle of the night. Putting on slippers and tying her robe together Ada sleepily went to the door and opened it.
The dog froze at Ada’s feet.
“Out!” she whispered loudly, trying to coax the animal outdoors. But the dog refused to budge.
Ada reached down to grab the pet’s collar. The dog’s eyes were wide with fright.
She turned toward the door. And that’s when she saw it.
The little island located just across the lake from Ada’s camp was bathed in brilliant white light. And above the island, perhaps a hundred feet up, was the source of that light – a colorful orb-shaped object that gave off a low pitched hum as it hovered in mid-air.
Ada gasped. She called for her husband.
But before he could get to the door the mysterious object was gone.
Ada said it just zoomed away into the black sky.
Toward Lempster Mountain.
I don’t know what to make of Ada’s report, but I do know Ada – a very sincere, intelligent and down-to-earth person. She is not what I would describe as a UFO whacko, given to seeing things that aren’t really there and assuming every mysterious light in the sky is a UFO. I trust Ada.
And I also trust Jim.
A well-known and highly-respected businessman in town, Jim was driving south on Rte. 31, heading to Hillsboro to pick up his kids. It was winter time and already dark. Suddenly a bright light flooded the roadway. Jim braked the car to a stop. Looking up, he saw a pulsating roundish object hovering just above the treetops. “It was so close I could have thrown a stone and hit it,” Jim told the Boston TV station that reported the incident.
People wonder why there is so much UFO activity around Lempster Mountain. I mean, WHY Lempster Mountain in tiny Lempster, NH? Why not famous Mt. Washington, or even Washington D.C. for that matter?
I suppose we’ll never know the complete answer. But I’m left wondering about something that just seems odd to me.
More than ten years ago the citizens of Lempster approved a plan to build a wind farm in their town. Today, twelve 196-foot tall windmills catch the lively breezes blowing across the ridges of Lempster Mountain. These 12 windmills drive turbines producing 24 megawatts of electricity.
24 megawatts, according to the town, is enough electricity to power about 10,000 homes.
But Lempster has fewer than 500 homes.
Hmmmm….
